This factor is 3.5 by default. It affects how much text will fit in a single line. The higher the value, the wider the message window will be.
Several internal calculations are related with this value.
You shoudn't mess with this value unless you change the default font for the Message Replacement window and you see truncated or missing lines on your messages.
